According to its about page, the news site was initially founded as a news agency owned by Bangladesh News 24 Hours Ltd. In 2016, Toufique Imrose Khalidi and Asif Mahmood became the new owners of BDnews24. Toufique Imrose Khalidi is also the editor-in-chief of BDnews24.

In 2023, Reporters Without Borders ranked Bangladesh 161/180 in their Press Freedom Index, stating there is a “disturbing increase in press freedom violations.” Sheikh Hasina has been the country’s Prime Minister since 2009. She is the leader of the Center-Left Awami League.
