History

The Ohio Independent is one of five progressive-liberal imposter news websites designed to look like a local media outlet. The website is published by American Independent Media, which appears to be connected to the American Independent Foundation, a progressive liberal organization started by David Brock in 2014. David Brock also controls Media Matters for America and the super PAC American Bridge 21st Century, which focuses on “tracking” Republican candidates.

According to its about us page, the “mission is to use journalism to educate the public, giving them the information they need about local and federal issues.”

Funded by / Ownership

The Ohio Independent is owned and published by American Independent Media. The website appears connected to True Blue Media, which publishes The American Independent, using content from The American Independent Foundation, a non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization. The website is not transparent in how it is funded as they do not have advertising or solicit donations.

Analysis / Bias

The Ohio Independent website is designed to look like a local media outlet. The website uses the same template as the other five American Independent Media Network imposter sites. The network also republishes articles from The American Independent’s website, with a disclosure at the bottom of articles that reads “Published with permission of The American Independent Foundation,” the nonprofit arm of The American Independent.

In review, the Ohio Independent publishes original news stories with loaded language: Ohio GOP Rep. Steve Chabot’s vote against contraception bill slammed in new ads. Articles are adequately sourced from outlets such as the Washington Post, Daily Beast, and CNN. The website also republishes news content from the Associated Press.

Editorially, all stories and opinions favor the left and usually denigrate the right. Furthermore, the Ohio Independent has a link for community news, leading to a recipe for Coffee Cakes. While some stories mention Ohio, most are hyper-partisan political pieces promoting the Democratic Party. In general, this is a left-biased imposter website that promotes Democratic Party propaganda and lacks transparency.
