Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who previously served as the first woman speaker from 2007 to 2011, ran unopposed for the leadership post on Wednesday and was tapped in a closed-door vote by House Democrats.
A long-simmering insurgency against the 78-year-old California lawmaker, including from some members seeking a generational change in House leadership, appeared to crumble in recent days. Pelosi is expected to be elected speaker when the full House votes in January.
