Funded by / Ownership

Times Now operates under The Times Network, which is the television division of Bennett Coleman & Company Limited (BCCL), also known as The Times Group. The Times Group, over 100 years old, is one of India’s largest media conglomerates and is owned by the Jain Family. Bennett Broadcasting and Distribution Services Limited and Times Internet Limited are significant entities in the channel’s ownership structure, with Times Internet Limited holding 99.9% of the shares in Bennett Broadcasting and Distribution Services Limited. The complex shareholding pattern indicates that the Jain Family holds a majority stake in BCCL.

Analysis / Bias

Times Now has faced several accusations and reprimands regarding its reporting and bias. The National Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) and its successor, the National Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA), have criticized the channel for biased coverage and violating codes of ethics in various instances.

The channel was reprimanded for derogatory remarks about an activist, misrepresenting facts in an interview, biased coverage of the Tablighi Jamaat congregation, and for conducting debates on the 2020 Delhi riots in a manner deemed not “impartial and objective.”

Times Now is accused of biased reporting in favor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is considered to be a “Godi-media” (lapdog media) by critics. BBC News and Newslaundry have reported on biases toward the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the use of “dog whistles” to portray Indian Muslims negatively.

In general, Times Now holds right-leaning views in favor of the right-wing government and the published misinformation, as evidenced by failed fact checks.
