History

Founded in 1997, Nine.com.au is an Australian news portal consisting of 9News, Nine’s Wide World of Sports, and 9Honey.

According to their about page, “In 1997, in partnership with Microsoft, Channel 9 launched ninemsn, one of the original and most widely used online platforms in Australia. In 2016 Ninemsn became nine.com.au, and today nine.com.au is one of Australia’s leading websites for news, sport, lifestyle, and entertainment.”

Nine Entertainment Co owns Nine.com.au. The general public holds a 45% stake in Nine Entertainment Holdings. Birketu Pty. Ltd. is the largest shareholder with 15%, a significant stake; however, “no single shareholder has a majority interest in the ownership.” Birketu Pty. Ltd is owned by Bruce Gordon. Their assets include significant newspapers such as The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and The Australian Financial Review. The network’s headquarters are located in Sydney. Advertising generates revenue.

Analysis / Bias

Nine.com.au is an internet portal that publishes news and current events from 9News, Nine’s Wide World of Sports, 9Honey, and the 9Now video-on-demand service. Articles and headlines contain moderately loaded emotional wording such as this No more freebies as domestic airlines scrap pandemic rules. Most news stories redirect to the right-center biased 9news website. World news also comes from 9News, which republishes CNN and the Associated Press sources.

Editorially, they do not produce op-eds; however, when reporting on science, they promote the consensus on covid-19 and climate change, such as this Atlantic Ocean warmest it has been for 3000 years, scientists say, and “Scientists demand federal government act on climate change.” Further, a Reuters institute survey found that 61% of respondents trust their news coverage and 17% do not, ranking them #5 in trust of the major Australian news providers. They generally report the news factually and with a right-leaning editorial bias.
