MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 04/22/2026

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

FALSE Claim via Social Media: Planning for the Artemis II mission began during former U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration.

Snopes rating: False (The four astronauts who flew on the Artemis II mission were selected during the Biden administration. Planning for the mission began, however, under the first Trump administration and, as a whole, has roots dating back to the presidencies of Barack Obama and George W. Bush.)

Did Artemis II mission planning begin with Biden? We explored its roots

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: Image proves Steve Bannon had urine on his pants at a World Economic Forum event.

Lead Stories rating: False (The dark area running along the inside of Bannon’s thighs appears to be a different type and color of fabric rather than a stain. Its shape and intensity shift depending on whether he is standing or sitting, as well as the angle and lighting conditions in the image. These variations are consistent with changing light and perspective, not with a fixed wet spot on clothing.)

Fact Check: Image Does NOT Show Steve Bannon Had Urine On His Pants At World Economic Forum Event

MISLEADING Claim by Donald Trump (R): The U.S. is fully independent of Middle East oil.

Associated Press rating: Misleading (The U.S. imports relatively little oil from the region, but global markets mean Middle East disruptions still affect prices.)

Fact check: False claims in Trump’s address about Iran war

Donald Trump Rating

MOSTLY
TRUE
Claim by Democratic National Committee: President Donald Trump’s proposed 2027 military budget would be “the largest spending increase since World War II.”

PolitiFact rating: Mostly True (Adjusting for inflation, President Donald Trump’s fiscal year 2027 budget proposal would represent the largest military spending increase since World War II. In terms of percentage increase measured in actual dollars, Trump’s proposal would increase the defense budget by 44%, making it the largest percentage increase in actual dollars since the Korean War and the third largest since WWII.)

Would Trump’s proposed military budget be the largest increase since WWII?

DNC Rating

FALSE (International: Iran): Iranian Navy speedboat intercepted a US warship in the Strait of Hormuz.

AFP Fact Check rating: False
