History

Patikrinta 15min (Verified 15min) is a Lithuanian fact-checking project launched in August 2016 as part of the 15min news portal. It verifies political statements, viral social media posts, health claims, manipulated media, and other potentially misleading information.

The project became the first Baltic fact-checking organization recognized by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) in 2018 and has also been verified by the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN). Its standards prohibit journalists from holding positions in political parties and require the same verification methods regardless of a claimant’s political orientation.

Funded by / Ownership

Patikrinta 15min is operated and primarily financed by UAB 15min. The parent company’s main revenue source is advertising, although sponsored and promotional content is excluded from articles carrying the Patikrinta 15min label. The project has also received funding through Meta’s fact-checking program, including $48,000 awarded through an IFCN-Meta initiative in 2020.

15min Group is controlled through the Lithuanian holding company 4 Bees. Since 2025, its shareholders have included Tomas Balžekas, Martynas Basokas, Gabrielė Burbienė, Tomas Bindokas, Justinas Jarutis, and Mediatech, a Tesonet-affiliated digital media company that acquired a 22.18% minority stake in 4 Bees.

Analysis / Bias

According to its fact-checking methodology, Patikrinta 15min verifies checkable factual claims rather than opinions and provides links to documents, databases, media reports, experts, and archived copies of material being examined. Fact checks must also be reviewed by another qualified editor before publication.

In Kremlin “Expert” Again Spreads Horrifying Lies: Organs of Fallen Soldiers Are Not Traded, the project examines Russian claims that Ukraine harvests and sells organs from dead soldiers. The article checks Ukrainian law, transplantation requirements, previous versions of the narrative, and comments from medical specialists before concluding that the allegations are false. Although the wording toward Russian propaganda is strongly critical, the factual conclusion is well supported.

Similarly, Kennedy Jr. Lied Again, and Netizens Believed Him examines Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s claims that RSV and Lyme disease originated through gain-of-function research. The article relies on scientific research, genetic evidence, experts, FactCheck.org, WHO findings, and historical records while appropriately distinguishing the unsupported RSV and Lyme claims from continuing uncertainty over COVID-19’s origin.

The project tends to scrutinize Russian propaganda, health misinformation, anti-vaccine claims, and threats to democratic institutions. This can create a liberal or pro-Western appearance in story selection, but there is insufficient evidence that its factual judgments systematically favor Lithuania’s political left or right.

Its transparency is particularly strong. The project publishes its methodology, ownership, funding, conflicts-of-interest requirements, organizational structure, ratings system, and detailed corrections policy. A July 2026 academic study examining European fact-checkers identified 3,054 Patikrinta 15min fact checks and found no published factual corrections in the analyzed sample.
