Michael Tracey is an independent journalist and political commentator based in Jersey City, New Jersey. According to his About page, he has contributed to publications across the political spectrum, including The Nation, The American Conservative, Vice, the New York Daily News, New York Post, and UnHerd. He was also a correspondent for The Young Turks from 2017 to 2018.

His Substack combines original reporting with political and media criticism that he describes as “heterodox” and intentionally contrary to mainstream political narratives.

Analysis / Bias

Tracey is difficult to place neatly on the traditional left-right spectrum. He has supported Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard, criticizes American militarism and concentrated political power, and frequently attacks Republicans and Donald Trump. At the same time, he is highly critical of progressive identity politics, Democratic institutions, mainstream media, Russiagate narratives, and what he considers excessive claims of victimization or political scandal.

In Breaking: “Adult Grooming” Scandal DESTROYS the International Criminal Court!, Tracey aggressively challenges sexual-misconduct allegations against former ICC prosecutor Karim Khan. The article contains extensive sourcing, but its mocking treatment of the accuser and repeated speculation that the relationship may have been consensual goes well beyond what the publicly established evidence proves. Reuters reported that ICC member states ultimately removed Khan after concluding that the allegations constituted a serious breach of duty.

Similarly, What Advice Would I Give Graham Platner? argues that rape allegations against a Democratic Senate candidate were politically manufactured. Tracey identifies weaknesses he sees in the reporting but repeatedly moves from evidentiary criticism into confident conclusions about motivations and orchestration that remain partly interpretive.

In Donald Trump, Theodore Roosevelt, and the End of American Imperium, Tracey takes a skeptical view of centralized American power and imperial reach, illustrating an anti-interventionist perspective that differs from both mainstream Democrats and Republicans.

Overall, Tracey’s strongest ideological characteristic is anti-establishment contrarianism rather than consistent support for either major party. His reporting often contains substantial primary sourcing and original investigation, but his commentary uses sarcasm, loaded language, and highly adversarial framing.

Failed Fact Checks

• Snopes rated a claim promoted by Tracey about Ukraine’s Constitution as Mixture. Tracey correctly quoted language stating that Ukraine has a duty to “preserve the gene pool of the Ukrainian people,” but omitted the surrounding context connecting the provision to protecting people affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Snopes concluded that presenting the language without that context created a misleading impression.
