FALSE
Claim by Jim Jordan (R): “I got a list of 20 jurisdictions that defunded the police to the tune of over $1 billion total.”

Politifact rating: Mostly False (U.S. Rep Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, cited a list compiled by his staff of 21 cities that had proposed fiscal year 2021 funding decreases for police departments. But at least 14 of the cities scaled back the proposed cuts before the budgets were adopted or reversed course the following budget year.)

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan’s list of cities that ‘defunded’ police doesn’t account for reversals

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: US chicken and egg shortage is linked to Bill Gates and his plan for synthetic egg.

Lead Stories rating: False (Crackpots making stuff up.)

Fact Check: NO Evidence Linking Bill Gates To Egg Shortage In US

FALSE Claim via Social Media: The officers who beat Tyre Nichols targeted him because he was “allegedly dating” one of their wives.

Politifact rating: False (Neither investigators nor attorneys for the officers arrested in Tyre Nichols’ death have released any solid information about the officers’ motives. Police in its initial report said Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving, but the Memphis, Tennessee, police chief has since said surveillance footage does not substantiate that.)

Claims that Tyre Nichols was dating a police officer’s wife, girlfriend or ex are unsubstantiated

TRUE Claim by Gavin Newsom (D): Is Texas’ Gun Death Rate 67% Higher Than California?

Newsweek rating: True (When taking into account that California has around 9 million more residents that Texas, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, as of July 2022, this means California had an average of 8.5 gun deaths per 100,000 people, while Texas has 14.2 per 100,000. This means that, according to the 2020 figures, Texas’s gun death rate is around 67 percent higher than that of California’s, per 100,000 people.)

Fact Check: Is Texas’ Gun Death Rate 67% Higher Than California?

FALSE Claim by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D): “The largest contributor to the debt ceiling, or to our deficit, has been the Trump tax cuts.”

PolitiFact rating: False (Trump’s tax cut added significantly to the federal debt. But three other bills are expected to add nearly as much or more to the debt, and each received Democratic support: a 2019 spending bill, the 2020 CARES Act, and the 2021 American Rescue Plan.)

Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez overestimates Trump tax cuts’ contribution to national debt

FALSE (International: Australia): Dubai city’s name was changed by UAE ruler to ‘Hind City’ to honour India and Hindus.

The Quint rating: False

Fact-Check | No, an Area in Dubai Was Not Renamed as ‘Hind City’ To Honour India
