Funded by / Ownership

Just Solutions is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It publicly identifies its leadership and staff, with Aiko Schaefer serving as Executive Director.

Funding has come from philanthropic organizations including the Breakthrough Energy Foundation, Heising-Simons Foundation, Kresge Foundation, and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. These funders supported research and policy work, including the organization’s climate-justice planning reports.

Analysis / Bias

Just Solutions advocates strongly progressive environmental and economic policies. Its framework explicitly links climate change to racial inequality, economic inequality, and structural discrimination, stating that “climate justice is racial justice.” It supports race-conscious policymaking, targeted investment in Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, and stronger public intervention in energy and infrastructure policy.

For example, Affording Our Energy Future supports income-based utility payment plans, year-round shutoff protections, community solar, major efficiency investments, and restructuring utility incentives around affordability rather than traditional revenue models.

Its Blueprints for Belonging initiative explicitly calls for using public investment to reshape markets toward “public purpose” and build a long-term justice-centered civic infrastructure.

The organization is also sharply critical of Republican climate and social policy. For example, its analysis of the 2025 Republican reconciliation bill describes the legislation as gutting climate protections, extending tax benefits to the wealthy, cutting social programs, and advancing an “immigration police state.”

Despite its strong advocacy orientation, Just Solutions generally bases its reports on government energy data, academic research, technical studies, and clearly identified researchers. Its publications are typically well sourced, but they give limited emphasis to opposing conservative or market-oriented perspectives.
