Funded by / Ownership

The cybersecurity intelligence company Recorded Future owns The Record. Recorded Future was founded in 2009, and Mastercard acquired it in 2024.

The Record states that it operates as an editorially independent newsroom separate from Recorded Future’s commercial activities, with policies intended to maintain a firewall between editorial and business operations. The publication is generally available without a paywall.

Analysis / Bias

The Record primarily publishes technical and policy reporting rather than ideological commentary. Its coverage scrutinizes governments, technology companies, cybercriminal groups, and intelligence agencies across political and national boundaries without a consistent Left or Right pattern.

For example, Trump taps cyber firms to go on offensive against criminals reports a Trump administration cybersecurity initiative primarily from the presidential memorandum and responses from lawmakers rather than through partisan framing.

Likewise, “China-linked hackers turning popular cybersecurity tool into ransomware launchpad, Microsoft warns” relies on Microsoft threat intelligence and technical details, while “Inspector general finds NIST mistakes have made vulnerability database ineffective” reports critically on U.S. government cybersecurity failures using an inspector general report.

Factual standards are strong. The Record frequently relies on government advisories, technical vulnerability disclosures, court records, cybersecurity researchers, company statements, and original interviews. Its editorial policy emphasizes accuracy, fairness, responsible vulnerability disclosure, corrections, and contacting subjects for comment.

The primary potential concern is ownership by a commercial threat-intelligence company. However, The Record publicly discloses this relationship and states that editorial and commercial operations are formally separated.
