History

Founded in November 2025, The Redoubt is an independent digital publication producing original reporting and political analysis. According to its About page, it was founded by American journalist Charles R. Davis and operates from Austria.

Davis has previously reported for publications including The Guardian, The Daily Beast, The New Republic, and Columbia Journalism Review and began his journalism career covering Congress for public radio. His reporting has also covered Latin America, Europe, and Türkiye.

The publication describes its mission as defending democratic values, equality, and internationalism while challenging oppression and reactionary politics. It has explicitly characterized its work as “original reporting and progressive analysis.”

In Trump administration to support ‘independent journalism’ in Europe with anti-immigrant focus, Davis reports on State Department grants intended to support European journalism focused on immigration, national sovereignty, and “civilizational values.” The article links directly to federal grant documents and quotes the State Department’s criteria, including provisions allowing substantial U.S. government involvement.
