Analysis / Bias
Defending Democracy Together funds various projects, including Republicans for Ukraine (gopforukraine.com), Voting Rights (rvr.gop) and Rule of Law (ruleoflawrepublicans.com); Becoming American Initiative, dispelling myths about immigrants (becomingamericaninitiative.org); and The Russia Tweets, analyzing Russian online influence (russiatweets.com). Additionally, Defending Democracy Together allocated $13 million in grants, with $6 million going to its initiative, “Republican Voters Against Trump; this aims to shift support away from Donald Trump. CNBC analyzed this information from a 990 tax form.
Defending Democracy Together does not publish traditional articles or reports for factual analysis. Instead, they focus on action-oriented projects and advocacy. Their platform primarily serves as a hub for their various initiatives, emphasizing practical efforts over analytical reporting. To assess Defending Democracy Together’s factual reporting, we examined their Republicans for the Ukraine project. This initiative includes a “GOP Congressional Report Card” that grades U.S. lawmakers on their support for Ukraine based on their voting record and public statements, ranging from A to F. For instance, Rep. Robert Aderholt received a ‘B.’ The grade reflects his actions, like voting for the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act and other supportive measures while opposing amendments against Ukraine aid. Rep. Robert Aderholt’s ‘B’ grade reflects his supportive legislative actions but is moderated by his neutral public statements.
Another example is Rep. Rick Allen from Georgia. Regarding his support for Ukraine, he received a ‘D’ grade, indicating poor support. He did not vote on the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022, which would have allowed the lending or leasing of American defense material to Ukraine. However, he did vote in favor of the 2022 Ukraine Supplemental Appropriation. Rep. Allen also voted against the Ukraine Security Assistance and Oversight Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2023. His relevant statements further support his stance.
Defending Democracy Together, with its clear advocacy mission, prioritizes promoting its agenda through advocacy and campaign-driven activities, often at the expense of in-depth analytical reporting.
