Funded by / Ownership
David Smith, executive chairman of Sinclair and owner of over 180 local stations, acquired The Baltimore Sun, Capital Gazette, and several other Maryland publications in January 2024 from Tribune Publishing, previously owned by Alden Global Capital’s MediaNews Group, with conservative commentator Armstrong Williams as a minority shareholder. Advertising and subscription fees generate revenue.
Analysis / Bias
The Baltimore Sun continues to publish factual local reporting with minimally loaded language and proper sourcing from staff journalists. For example, local coverage such as Towson residents, businesses say they feel safe after fatal shooting reflects standard community reporting, while national news is primarily sourced from the Associated Press and Baltimore Sun reporters.
However, since the January 2024 purchase by David D. Smith, executive chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, and conservative commentator Armstrong Williams, the paper’s editorial direction has shifted rightward. Baltimore Brew reported that Baltimore Sun Guild journalists objected to a proposed non-disparagement clause and raised concerns about changes in editorial standards, including the use of Sinclair and Fox 45 content. Semafor reported that Smith has been personally involved in reshaping the paper’s investigative priorities, including scrutiny of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and the hiring of staff connected to conservative politics.
Editorially, the Sun now appears more balanced than in previous years but with a new right-center tilt. Recent editorials, such as Jill Biden takes heat for rehashing husband’s debate debacle, are critical of Democratic figures, while the Inspector General raises tough questions about city spending, scrutinizing local government spending and accountability. Although the news division still produces solid journalism, ownership influence, syndicated Sinclair content, and a more conservative editorial emphasis support moving the bias rating to Right-Center.
