History

Sanatan Prabhat is a Hindu nationalist news and advocacy publication founded in 1998 by Sachchidananda Parabrahman Dr. Jayant Athavale, founder of the Hindu spiritual organization Sanatan Sanstha.

Sanatan Sanstha itself identifies Athavale as the founder-editor of the Sanatan Prabhat group of periodicals and states that the publications were created to advance awareness of “Nation and Dharma” and promote the establishment of a Hindu Rashtra.

The publication appears in several Indian languages, including an English fortnightly and online edition.

Sanatan Prabhat is affiliated with Sanatan Sanstha, the nonprofit Hindu spiritual organization founded by Jayant Athavale. Sanatan Sanstha and the closely associated Hindu Janajagruti Samiti share the explicit goal of establishing India as a Hindu Rashtra.

Sanatan Sanstha states that Sanatan Prabhat has historically operated despite financial losses as part of its religious and ideological mission. Sanatan Prabhat is explicitly Hindu nationalist rather than merely sympathetic to India’s political right. Sanatan Sanstha describes the publication as a “staunchly Hindu periodical” dedicated to establishing a Hindu nation with Dharma as its foundation. Athavale has repeatedly urged supporters to work toward establishment of a Hindu Rashtra.

In one article, it concludes that Hindu women should avoid friendships with “fanatic Muslim girls,” while related Sanatan material characterizes “Love Jihad” as religious terrorism and alleges organized financing behind it.

The broader “Love Jihad” narrative is widely regarded by scholars and researchers as an unsupported conspiracy theory rather than evidence of a centrally coordinated campaign. Sanatan Prabhat and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti were among the organizations that helped popularize the concept.

Its international reporting can also reflect geopolitical preferences. In Japan has enough plutonium to make 5,500 nuclear bombs and could develop nuclear weapons at any time!, the publication reproduces assertions from China’s ambassador to Russia and then speculates that China made the statement because it is “alarmed” by strengthening India-Japan relations, without providing evidence for that conclusion.

The publication also promotes pseudoscientific spiritual claims. Sanatan Sanstha states that Athavale has conducted research into “subtle energies,” spiritual healing, astrology, divine children, and alleged “Divine Particles.” It claims these particles materialize through spiritual energy and possess a chemical composition unlike anything on Earth. These assertions are not supported by established scientific evidence.
