MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 08/18/2025

Fact Check Search

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by Donald Trump (R): The U.S. makes “$2 billion a day” from tariffs, and Biden lost $2–$3 billion a day.

FactCheck.org rating: False (Trump conflated a high-end estimate of potential tariff revenue with the average daily trade deficit under Biden. Economists say a trade deficit is not a “loss” and can’t be equated to tariff revenue.)

TRUE Claim via Social Media: A company backed by billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has produced lab-made butter using carbon.

Snopes rating: True (Breakthrough Energy Ventures, an investment fund founded by Gates, is a shareholder in Savor, which launched carbon-based lab-made butter in March 2025. Gates is not directly involved in Savor’s management.)

Bill Gates-backed company created lab-made butter

MISLEADING Claim by Kathy Hochul (D): “Congressional districts are never redrawn mid-decade [but Republicans in Texas are] flagrantly breaking the rules so they can hold on to power.”

FactCheck.org rating: Misleading (Districts have been redrawn mid-decade many times, but that’s usually due to legal challenges — making Texas’ mid-decade redistricting without court action rare.)

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: North Carolina passed a law allowing foreign doctors to practice medicine in that state without taking a U.S. qualification exam.

Lead Stories rating: False (The law requires foreign doctors to not only have passed their own country’s medical qualification exam, but another test chosen by the North Carolina Medical Board. The doctors could only practice in the rural hospital where they are hired and they must be supervised by another licensed physician.)

Fact Check: North Carolina Did NOT Pass A Law Allowing Foreign Doctors To Practice Without Passing a U.S. Qualification Exam

FALSE (International: China): China’s navy conducted a live-fire drill in Australian waters.

AAP rating: False (The drill occurred in international waters in the Tasman Sea.)

Coalition MPs falsely claim China’s live-fire drill was in ‘our waters’
