The Latest Fact Checks curated by Media Bias Fact Check 10/14/2023 (Weekend Edition)

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

MOSTLY
TRUE
Claim by West Virginia Republican Party: “Since Biden took office … real wages have fallen monthly.”

PolitiFact rating: Mostly True (Inflation has outpaced wages for most of Biden’s tenure in office. Wages outpaced inflation for Biden’s first three months, and over the past four months, as inflation has receded.)

Are West Virginia Republicans correct that real wages have fallen since Joe Biden took office?

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by the Epoch Times: COVID-19 vaccines are responsible for killing 17 million people.

Health Feedback Rating: Incorrect (The analysis by Rancourt et al. arrived at its conclusion by claiming that spikes in excess mortality in the post-vaccination period correlated to vaccine rollout. Apart from the fact that correlation alone cannot demonstrate a causal relationship, it neglected to account for the fact that these spikes in excess mortality corresponded to surges of COVID-19 deaths. This means that these spikes were very likely due to COVID-19, not the vaccines.)

Analysis claiming to find COVID-19 vaccines killed 17 million people is highly flawed, doesn’t account for COVID-19 mortality surges

Epoch Times Rating

FALSE Claim by Jesse Watters: James Biden’s text message to Hunter Biden that says, “I can work with you(r) father alone,” shows that Joe Biden was “in business” with Hunter Biden.

PolitiFact rating: False (An investigators’ summary of the text message exchange shows that James Biden’s message was about family matters such as alimony and tuition, not business.)

In GOP impeachment inquiry, texts don’t prove that Joe Biden was ‘in business’ with Hunter Biden

Jesse Watters Rating

FALSE (International: Germany): Video of howling people in Germany shows “trans species rights” protest.

PolitiFact rating: False (The video featuring people in dog costumes was taken during a “pup walk,” which was part of a September fetish festival in Berlin. It was not a protest for people who identify as animals.)

Video of people dressed as dogs is part of a fetish festival, not a ‘trans-species rights’ protest
