Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, who is second in line to the governorship, admitted on Wednesday that he wore blackface as a youth.
Herring said he did so as a 19-year-old college student at a party where he and others “dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup.” He said it was a one-time occurrence that he regretted and called it a “callous and inexcusable lack of awareness and insensitivity.” His announcement comes as Gov. Ralph Northam is facing calls to resign after a photo on his medical school yearbook page showed a person in blackface; Northam also acknowledged appearing in blackface at a dance contest.
