Analysis / Bias

Wellesley Institute advocates consistently progressive social and economic policies. Its work emphasizes affordable, supportive housing; expanded public services; racial and health equity; stronger social programs; and reduced economic inequality.

For example, its Ontario 2026 Budget submission on supportive housing calls for at least 40,000 new supportive housing units, preferably operated by nonprofits, along with approximately $10 billion in public capital and operating support over ten years. It also recommends targeted funding for Indigenous, racialized, disabled, and other structurally disadvantaged groups.

Its economic analysis is similarly progressive. Wealth and health: A review of interventions addressing wealth inequality links rising inequality to weakened worker protections, reduced union power, inadequate wages, precarious employment, and increased concentration of wealth.

Wellesley Institute also explicitly incorporates structural racism and social justice into its health-policy framework. Its statement on anti-Black racism and health describes structural racism as a major determinant of health and calls for institutional and policy changes to reduce racial disparities.

Despite its strong advocacy orientation, Wellesley Institute’s research is generally evidence-based. Publications cite government statistics, academic studies, peer-reviewed research, health-system data, and formal review methodologies. Authors and researchers are clearly identified, and policy recommendations are typically separated from the underlying evidence.
