History

WinRed, a for-profit fundraising platform, was launched in 2019 as the Republican counterpart to ActBlue. The platform was initially announced as Patriot Pass before being rebranded as WinRed. It is supported by key Republican entities, including the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee (RNC), and other GOP committees. WinRed combines the services of Revv, a GOP payment processing firm, and DataTrust, the party’s voter data repository, to offer streamlined donation capabilities.

The platform is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and aims to provide fundraising technology for Republican candidates and committees. Gerrit Lansing is the founder of WinRed and Revv. Ryan Lyk is the CEO of WinRed and Revv.

Funded by / Ownership

WinRed is funded through contributions made via its platform, which charges a 3.94% processing fee on donations. The platform receives significant financial support from various sources, including individual donors and affiliated organizations. For example, high-profile contributions have come from entities like the Trump campaign, which raised substantial amounts through WinRed. Major donors include Craig Duchossois, who donated $707,300 on March 15, 2023, and Charles Schwab, who contributed $483,900 on March 28, 2023. The platform also benefits from partnerships with Revv and DataTrust, providing essential infrastructure and data support. Transparency is maintained through regular reporting to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), detailing all contributions regardless of the amount.

Analysis / Bias

WinRed exhibits a right-leaning bias, reflecting its mission to support Republican candidates and conservative causes. GOP campaigns use The platform extensively, from local races to presidential elections, to mobilize small-dollar donations. For instance, WinRed facilitated over $300,000 in contributions for Dan Bishop’s victory in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District special election. The platform’s focus on raising funds for Republican candidates and its strategic partnerships with key GOP data and payment processing services demonstrate its alignment with Republican interests.

WinRed’s fundraising efforts also include strong critiques of Democratic figures and policies. For example, the “Fire Joe Biden Fund” page on WinRed solicits donations with a message critical of President Biden. Another example is the “Save America Joint Fundraising Committee,” which raises funds for Trump’s campaign and related activities, often featuring strong criticisms of Democratic policies and leadership.
