History
Unbreaking is a U.S.-based volunteer research and advocacy project launched in 2025 to document changes in the federal government under the second Trump administration. It maintains regularly updated timelines and explainers covering immigration, Medicaid, transgender healthcare, infectious disease, scientific research funding, federal employment, data security, and government archives.
According to its About page, Mandy Brown, Sydette Harry, Erin Kissane, Yvonne Lam, Liz Neeley, and Chris Xu founded Unbreaking. The project says it documents institutional “damage and resistance” and helps communities understand changes in federal policy. It does not conduct original reporting; instead, it synthesizes existing journalism, government records, court documents, and research.

The project states that if outside fundraising begins, it will publicly disclose funders. Raft Foundation received federal tax-exempt status in 2024.
Analysis / Bias
Unbreaking publishes from an explicitly progressive and anti-Trump perspective. Its mission is not neutral political analysis but documenting what it describes as damage caused by the current administration and tracking legal, political, and community resistance to those policies.
For example, its Immigration page describes Trump administration policy as a “multi-pronged assault” on immigrants and repeatedly characterizes enforcement actions as attacks on due process and immigrant communities. Its Equitable Federal Workforce section argues that anti-DEI policies weaken civil-rights protections and disproportionately target Black, LGBTQ+, female, and disabled federal workers.
The site also strongly supports transgender healthcare, Medicaid, federal scientific research, public-health institutions, and diversity initiatives. Its Transgender Healthcare timeline describes federal restrictions on gender-affirming care as “attacks,” while its Medical Research Funding section describes administration policy as an effort to “manipulate and derail” biomedical research.
Despite this strong ideological framing, Unbreaking generally provides extensive sourcing. Timeline entries commonly link to court decisions, executive orders, government documents, scientific research, and established news organizations. The project also states that it cross-checks reporting and does not use generative AI to produce its content.
The primary factual weakness is one-sidedness. It generally presents conservative or administration arguments as policies to be resisted rather than as competing perspectives deserving equal consideration. Therefore, while individual factual claims are often well documented, the overall presentation functions as progressive advocacy rather than neutral reference material.
