TheGrio is an American website with news, opinion, entertainment, and video content geared toward African Americans. TheGrio is one of the largest news sources for black America. According to their about page, “The goal of theGrio is to satisfy the need of African-Americans to stay informed and connected with our community. TheGrio’s editorial mandate is to focus on news and events that have a unique interest and/or pronounced impact for the African-American audience.”

TheGrio is owned by Entertainment Studios, which was founded by comedian Byron Allen that operates a group of digital cable and satellite channels. Revenue is derived through advertising.

Analysis / Bias

In review, TheGrio covers news ranging from entertainment to lifestyle to politics. Articles and headlines utilize moderately loaded language such as this Underwater and on fire: US climate change magnifies extremes. Original reporting is usually properly sourced to left-leaning publications such as The Washington Post, New York Times, and MSNBC. The website publishes original commentary on news stories and syndicated news from the Associated Press.

Editorially, TheGrio presents information with a strong left-leaning bias.
