Funded by / Ownership

The Next Move is published by the Renew Democracy Initiative Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Washington, D.C. Garry Kasparov serves as chairman, while Uriel Epshtein serves as CEO.

According to IRS records compiled by ProPublica, RDI reported approximately $5 million in revenue in 2024, with nearly all revenue coming from contributions. Past institutional support has included donor-advised funds and foundations, including Vanguard Charitable, the Foundation to Promote Open Society, and other philanthropic organizations.

The Next Move also generates revenue through paid subscriptions. Its About page states that subscriber contributions support both the publication and RDI programs, including civic education and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Analysis / Bias

The Next Move is explicitly pro-democracy and anti-authoritarian rather than consistently left- or right-wing. It strongly opposes Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán, the Iranian government, and other leaders or movements it views as threats to democratic institutions.

For example, Garry Kasparov’s King Trump’s Press Ban sharply criticizes Trump for restricting media access and compares his behavior with monarchical government. Likewise, 1776, Not January 6 describes January 6 as a victory for authoritarianism and argues that Trump was not adequately held accountable.

However, the publication is not conventionally progressive. The Next Move deliberately includes center-right and conservative contributors. In Fortune Favors the Bold, Kasparov explains that the pro-democracy movement should include both liberals and conservatives and introduces longtime conservative writer Jay Nordlinger as a contributor. The publication also features Is Bill Kristol Still a Neocon?, a discussion between Linda Chavez and Bill Kristol about their conservative backgrounds and political evolution.

The publication also criticizes the political left. For example, Zohran Mamdani is the Democratic Establishment’s Fault criticizes democratic socialism and the Democratic Party establishment, describing far-left politics as a potential electoral liability. Its archive also includes pieces such as Democratic Socialists vs. Social Democrats and “Five Things to Know About the DSA.”

On foreign policy, The Next Move is strongly internationalist and interventionist, particularly regarding Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and democratic movements abroad. Articles such as Beyond ‘Trump’s War’ support a strong U.S. role in confronting authoritarian regimes while criticizing the Trump administration’s strategy.

Factual sourcing is generally credible. Articles regularly link to court documents, government records, mainstream reporting, historical sources, and direct statements. For example, Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Case, Explained references Supreme Court arguments, constitutional history, and legal sources. The publication has also publicly corrected errors when readers identify them.

However, The Next Move is primarily advocacy and commentary rather than neutral reporting. Headlines and commentary frequently use loaded language, particularly when discussing Trump, Putin, authoritarian movements, and political extremism. This strong editorial framing and limited neutrality reduce its factual rating despite generally credible sourcing.
