Sunflower State Journal is a subscription-based news website covering Kansas politics, elections, the Legislature, courts, state government, and public policy. It was founded in 2018 by veteran political reporter Brad Cooper, who previously worked for the Associated Press and spent nearly two decades at The Kansas City Star, including four years covering the Kansas Statehouse. According to its About page, Cooper has more than 25 years of journalism experience.

Sunflower State Journal is independently operated by Brad Cooper. Its terms identify the publication as the owner of its content, while the site is funded primarily through paid subscriptions. Current registration information lists an annual subscription price of $180. Advertising does not appear to be a significant source of revenue.

Analysis / Bias

Sunflower State Journal specializes in Kansas state politics and generally reports in a straightforward, nonpartisan manner. Its mission statement describes the publication as independent and nonpartisan and states that its goal is to provide timely political information rather than promote an ideological position.

A review of political coverage supports this characterization. For example, Trump Endorses in Kansas Governor’s Race reports President Trump’s endorsement of Republican Ty Masterson while also including responses from other Republican and Democratic candidates. Similarly, Republicans Reflect on Defeat of Judicial Amendment describes the failure of a Republican-backed constitutional amendment without loaded language or editorializing.

The publication covers Republican and Democratic candidates, campaign finance, abortion, taxes, elections, judicial issues, and state government using direct quotations, campaign filings, polling, government records, and interviews.
