The San Jose Mercury News is published by the Bay Area News Group, a subsidiary of Digital First Media. Digital First Media owns nearly 100 newspapers across the USA. Digital First Media is owned by Alden Global Capital LLC, a New York-Based Hedge Fund, which has been described as “Vulture Capitalists” by former Denver Post writers for the cuts made to newsrooms.
