History
Peninsula Press is a student-run, data-driven local news publication operated by the Stanford Journalism Program. Founded in 2010 through Stanford’s Digital Media Entrepreneurship course, it later became a full working newsroom where graduate and undergraduate journalism students report on Silicon Valley communities. Its history includes early emphasis on underserved areas and experimentation with multimedia, 360-video, and data journalism.

Funded by / Ownership
Peninsula Press is owned by Stanford University and administered through the Stanford Journalism Program. Funding comes primarily from Stanford University, program resources, and its educational function. It has no ads, no subscriptions, and no commercial sponsors. Additional dissemination occurs through content-sharing partnerships with SFGate and KQED, but these do not appear to provide direct funding.
Analysis / Bias
Peninsula Press produces straightforward community reporting with a mild progressive lean due to topic selection and the ideological climate of Stanford. For example, the article California’s Lofgren Warns U.S. Sliding into Autocracy Under Trump largely presents Rep. Lofgren’s critiques of Donald Trump without offering a Republican rebuttal, reflecting a left-leaning frame consistent with local political demographics.
Coverage of cultural and environmental topics, such as Beyond Meatless Mondays and LGBTQ+ community events like San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ Community Celebrates ‘Radical Happiness’, also aligns with socially liberal perspectives.
Despite this, stories rely on interviews, academic experts, and direct observation, showing solid sourcing for student journalism. No conspiracy theories appear, and no speculative reporting patterns were found.
