History

Founded in 1950, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is an American private, non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting “transformational ideas that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, engage communities and foster the arts.” The current President and CEO is Alberto Ibargüen.

The Knight Foundation provides grants to many different organizations, especially those related to journalism.

The foundation was seeded by the estate of economically conservative newspaper publisher John S. “Jack” Knight.

Analysis / Bias

In review, the Knight Foundation provides grants to startups and companies that promote journalism and innovation. For example, they provide funding to Propublica and the Sunlight Foundation. In the past decade, the foundation has funded non-profit news sites, backed paying the salaries of individual reporters at newspapers, and supported many research projects about how newspapers can remain viable enterprises. In addition, the Knight Foundation gives grants to newspapers such as the Salt Lake City Tribune that have become nonprofits.
