LEFT-CENTER BIAS

These media sources have a slight to moderate progressive/liberal bias.  They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes) to favor progressive/liberal causes.  These sources are generally trustworthy for information, but may require further investigation. See all Left-Center sources.

  • Overall, we rate J Street as left-center biased due to its advocacy for progressive policies and solutions, such as supporting a two-state solution for Israel-Palestine and favoring President Biden’s initiatives. We rate them high factually due to transparency about their funding sources and use of credible sources.

History

J Street, founded in 2008, advocates for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is a pro-peace, pro-Israel non-profit and operates as both a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization and a 501(c)(3) educational organization headquartered in Washington, DC. As its website outlines, J Street’s mission is to organize pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy Americans to promote US policies aligned with deeply held Jewish and democratic values.  J Street also operates a federal Political Action Committee (PAC) that supports candidates who align with these values. The chair of the J-Street is Alan D. Solomont.

Funded by / Ownership

J Street, a non-profit organization, is overseen by a board of directors rather than individual owners. Funding primarily comes from individual donors, foundations, and supportive organizations. One of the funding sources mentioned is the Tikva Society. However, details about its activities and political stance are unclear due to its lack of transparency and absence of a website. Notably, “Tikva” could refer to different organizations, such as the Tikvah Fund, known for its conservative Jewish perspectives. Noteworthy foundation partners listed in J Street’s financial statement include the Open Society Foundations, The Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF), and the Jill and Bradford Gordon Family Foundation.

Analysis  /Bias

J Street’s advocacy is apparent in two distinct press releases. In “President Biden: Be Bold,”  they promote specific policies like the two-state solution and American leadership in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The language used here carries emotional weight, describing the conflict’s severity as a “horror” and a “never-ending cycle of violence and retaliation,” This reflects J Street’s historical support for a two-state solution and references past diplomatic efforts like the Arab League’s 2002 proposal.

On the other hand, their press release titled “To Defend Our Democracy, Remove Trump From Office” takes a critical stance against President Trump and his allies. It portrays them as contributors to insurrection and challenges to democracy, using terms like “act of insurrection and terror” to describe the Capitol attack. J Street urges immediate legal action to remove Trump from office, such as invoking the 25th amendment or impeachment proceedings. The release uses historical events to reinforce its stance, emphasizing past criticisms of Trump’s behavior and character. Additionally, regarding sourcing, J Street cites sources such as the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA)  and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

In general, J Street is left-leaning and fact-based; however, the lack of clarity regarding the ‘Tikva Society’ mentioned in their financials raises minor concerns about transparency and credibility.
