History

The Institute for Christian Socialism (ICS) was founded in 2019 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to revive and organize a distinct Christian socialist presence in the U.S. left. It launched The Bias Magazine as a platform for radical Christian thought, engaging in political education, grassroots organizing, and theological analysis rooted in the “socialism of the Gospel.”

Analysis / Bias

ICS is an openly socialist Christian think tank and media outlet that argues capitalism is incompatible with the teachings of Jesus. It consistently advocates for structural economic reform, ecological justice, queer liberation, anti-racism, feminism, and anti-imperialism. An example is its May 2025 essay on economic democracy that critiques capitalist structures as antithetical to real democracy. While highly editorialized, articles are generally well-argued and supported by theological citations and academic literature.

Its long-form criticism of class-reductionism within the U.S. left—particularly its critique of Jacobin—reflects thoughtful internal debate within leftist thought.

The Institute for Christian Socialism is a strongly progressive Christian think tank and publication that openly promotes socialist economic structures rooted in biblical teachings. It is transparently operated and highly ideological, yet it maintains a factual record, free from pseudoscience and misinformation. While its editorial tone is unapologetically leftist and anti-capitalist, it does not mislead or publish falsehoods.
