History

Founded in 2013,  The Climate Justice Alliance (CJA)  unites frontline communities, organizations, and networks to fight climate change and promote a Just Transition away from extractive systems. Rooted in environmental justice, CJA has supported significant actions such as the Standing Rock Water Protectors and the People’s Climate March.

Based in Washington, D.C., it advocates for systemic environmental and economic policy changes. Elizabeth Yeampierre, representing UPROSE, and Mateo Nube, from Movement Generation, are the Board Co-Chairs of the Climate Justice Alliance, indicating the collaborative leadership structure within the alliance’s network of member organizations.

Funded by / Ownership

The Climate Justice Alliance (CJA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is supported by its member organizations and potentially by contributions from individuals and grants from foundations that align with its mission of climate justice. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded CJA $50 million to support environmental justice initiatives. This grant, part of the broader EPA funding to enhance federal support for environmental justice communities, will be used by CJA to facilitate its UNITE-EJ project and other related activities.

Analysis / Bias

The CJA focuses on climate justice, emphasizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized communities. CJA seeks to promote a transition to sustainable, community-led economic systems through advocacy and campaigns. The alliance’s activities and publications generally advocate for systemic changes to address climate injustices, reflecting a clear environmental justice bias in its mission to support frontline communities affected by climate change.

In its press release titled “Bernie Sanders’ Green New Deal Proposal Is A Blueprint For The Regenerative Economy We Must Strive For” the Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) demonstrates a clear advocacy bias toward progressive environmental and climate justice policies. CJA supports Sanders’ Green New Deal for its focus on frontline communities and rejection of “false solutions” to climate change, reflecting CJA’s commitment to systemic change and environmental justice.

The leadership of Elizabeth Yeampierre, representing UPROSE, and Mateo Nube, from Movement Generation, as Board Co-Chairs of the Climate Justice Alliance reflects the collaborative and community-focused nature of CJA’s governance, further aligning with its mission.

CJA actively participates in federally recognized environmental justice grant programs and transparently advocates for progressive climate policies.

While the Climate Justice Alliance exhibits a left-leaning bias in its advocacy for progressive environmental policies, its factual engagement in environmental justice initiatives and successful grant applications contribute to its credibility.
