History
The Atlantic Council is a think tank in the field of international affairs. Founded in 1961, it provides a forum for international political, business, and intellectual leaders. It manages ten regional centers and functional programs related to international security and global economic prosperity. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The Atlantic Council was founded with the stated mission to encourage the continuation of cooperation between North America and Europe that began after World War II (Atlanticism). The current President and CEO is Frederick Kempe.
On February 22, 2019, the Atlantic Council released its Declaration of Principles at the Munich Security Conference, outlining common values that all western liberal democracies should adhere to. This was produced in response to a perceived movement toward more authoritarianism by western democracies; the declaration was signed by scores of former government officials and other experts.

Funded by / Ownership
The Atlantic Council is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization independent of the United States Government and NATO. In September 2014, Eric Lipton reported in The New York Times that since 2008, they had received donations from more than twenty-five foreign governments.
In 2015 and 2016, the three largest donors, giving over $1 million USD each, were US millionaire Adrienne Arsht (executive vice-chair), Lebanese billionaire Bahaa Hariri (estranged brother of former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri), and the United Arab Emirates. The full list of financial sponsors includes many military, financial, and corporate concerns.
The leading donors in 2018 were Facebook and the British government.

In review, The Atlantic Council publishes news and information related to USA/European interests. News is presented with moderate bias in wording: Brexit: Another day, another crisis. This story does not contain hyperlinked sourcing. The website also offers commentary and in-depth analysis of issues such as this: The value of the US nuclear power complex to US national security. This report is thoroughly sourced. When it comes to USA politics, the Atlantic Council does not have a favorable view of former President Trump such as this: Trump vs Erdoğan: It’s hard to bluff when your cards are on the table.
Editorially, the Atlantic Council is considered hawkish militarily with a strong alliance between the USA and NATO. They are opposed to Brexit and former President Trump’s removal of troops from Syria. When it comes to science, they support the consensus of science regarding climate change. Finally, in the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, they thoroughly favor the USA and NATO with stories such as this The Western response to Putin’s war has been remarkable. But it’s not enough. The Atlantic Council generally presents news and information with a moderate bias that favors pro-corporate and military interests, especially as it relates to Western interests.
