Public Support for Online Misinformation Restrictions Drops to Pre-2020 Levels

A new Pew Research Center poll reveals declining support among Americans for both government and tech company interventions to restrict false information online. As of early 2025, only 51% of Americans favor government efforts to limit misinformation, down from 55% in 2023. Support for tech companies taking similar actions also fell to 60% from 65%. Meanwhile, support for prioritizing freedom of information increased, with 47% backing government protection of this right and 38% saying the same of tech companies. Support for restricting violent content also saw significant declines. Thomson Reuters Drops ‘Diversity’ in Response to Trump DEI Order

Thomson Reuters has removed the term “diversity” from its internal policies and replaced it with “inclusion and belonging,” complying with President Trump’s recent executive orders eliminating federal support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The move follows similar actions by major corporations like Disney, Paramount, and Gannett. The orders call for the end of “discriminatory and illegal preferences” in federal contracting. State Department Shuts Down Disinformation Office Amid GOP Criticism

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has officially closed the Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference office, formerly the Global Engagement Center (GEC). The move follows Republican criticism that the office suppressed conservative voices, despite court rulings finding no coercion of social media platforms. The GEC had been central in tracking foreign propaganda efforts from Russia and China. Funding was eliminated at the end of 2024, and remaining personnel have been reassigned within the department.
