Newsmax Settles Smartmatic Defamation Lawsuit for $40 Million

Newsmax has agreed to pay Smartmatic $40 million to settle a defamation lawsuit over false claims about the 2020 election, according to a regulatory filing. The settlement includes cash payments over time and stock purchase options. Newsmax has already paid $20 million as of March 7. Smartmatic had accused the conservative network of promoting baseless conspiracy theories about its voting technology. Over 10,000 Domains Registered for Smishing Scams

Cybercriminals have created more than 10,000 fraudulent domains for smishing scams, according to Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42. These scams use deceptive SMS messages to impersonate toll services and package delivery providers across multiple U.S. states and Canada. The FBI has previously warned the public about an increase in toll-related smishing attempts. Victims are urged to delete suspicious messages and avoid clicking links. (Read More) [The Hill Rating]


Meta to Test ‘Community Notes’ for Fact-Checking on Facebook and Instagram

Meta will begin testing its new crowd-sourced fact-checking system, Community Notes, on March 18. The system is modeled after Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and replaces Meta’s previous fact-checking program, which was shut down in January amid claims of political bias. Unlike the previous system, Community Notes will not penalize posts for misinformation. The program will initially be available in the U.S., with plans for global expansion.
