History

The Independent Journal Review is an American news website founded in 2012. According to their about page “IJR is a news site that provides readers with reliable information about both sides of every issue. IJR also invites readers to experience the news through a blend of products and services that enable them to actively participate in story selection, development, and promotion.”

IJR lacks transparency as they do not list editors or disclose ownership.

Funded by / Ownership

According to Newsguard the website is owned by Independent Journal Review, Inc, which is a part of Media Group of America Holdings LLC. However, there is zero indication of this on the website. It is unknown how they generate revenue. It should be noted that NewsGuard’s review was done at a time when their domain was IJR.com and not the current IJR.org. It seems things have changed.

Analysis / Bias

In review, on our previous review of IJR they were a conservative news website that was high in factual reporting. Today it appears that people register to post stories. For example, this story Pelosi Says Art Depicting the Founding Fathers Should Not Come Down, comes from an author/poster who does not have a bio. This article is not particularly biased but is strictly sourced back to IJR. Most stories are summaries of larger national stories such as this: Nearly $1.4 Billion in Coronavirus Stimulus Checks Went to Dead People: Report. This story is properly sourced to the Government Accountability Office. Finally, they also republish stories from low biased credible sources such as Reuters.

In our previous review, IJR was under the domain .com, but has recently changed their domain to IJR.org. There is a significant difference in content with this new domain, publishing news from both perspectives, and utilizing minimal bias in reporting. Further, a fact check reveals they have not failed a fact check under this new domain. In general, IJR is now a least biased source that is factual in reporting but loses points for a lack of transparency regarding owners and editors.
