Trump ramps up rhetoric on media, calls press ‘the enemy of the people’

President Trump said Friday that the press is “truly the enemy of the people,” ratcheting up his use of the derisive label to attack the news media.

“The press is doing everything within their power to fight the magnificence of the phrase, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump tweeted.

“They can’t stand the fact that this Administration has done more than virtually any other Administration in its first 2yrs,” he continued. “They are truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”

The president has previously described specific outlets and “fake news” as the “enemy of the people,” but so far had not used the characterization to describe the full press corps.

Not without reason does Trump feel he can use this phrase. Even from my viewpoint as a lifelong journalist (fortunately now retired and recovering), the bias is breathtaking. I didn’t vote for Trump and won’t should be run again. He is an embarrassment to the country and our culture, and has NO idea how to govern, much less how to negotiate with the likes of China, Mexico, Russia. But he succeeds in goading the media down to his level, and it’s not pretty. Stunned in 2016 by his election, leading and respected media sources quickly took to promoting “the Resistance,” and far too many don’t seem to know how to stop. TV is especially awful — perhaps the most dangerous institution in America today.
