Monday, two more Republican senators announced their opposition to the American Health Care Act, derailing the GOP’s long winded attempts at repealing and replacing ObamaCare. The highly controversial senate bill was seen as too moderate or too conservative by either side of the Republican political spectrum.
Republican Senators Mike Lee and Jerry Moran announced late last night that they would not be supporting the bill, effectively killing the latest attempt by Republicans to repeal and replace Obamacare.
Moran, who faced mounting opposition from his home in Kansas said in a statement that the new bill “fails to repeal the Affordable Care Act or address health care’s rising costs”.
As for Lee he had this to say “In addition to not repealing all of the Obamacare taxes, it doesn’t go far enough in lowering premiums for middle-class families; nor does it create enough free space from the most costly Obamacare regulations.”
The stance chosen by the two senators combined with Susan Collins and Rand Paul’s opposition means that the Senate has no chance of passing the Bill. Republicans who lead the senate by a slim majority of 52 seats have effectively lost their majority when it comes to the new Bill.
Immediately after their announcements, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to urge Republicans to start on a clean slate in the hopes that Democrats would work with them.
“Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now & work on a new Healthcare Plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!”
Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority leader responded to the announcements by accepting the Bill’s defeat but refusing to give up on the President’s promise to repeal and replace ObamaCare.
“So, in the coming days, the Senate will vote to take up… a repeal of Obamacare with a two-year delay to provide for a stable transition period,”
“We look forward to Congress continuing to work toward a bill the president can sign to end the Obamacare nightmare.” McConnell said.
