History
Founded in 1970 and based in Washington, D.C., the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is an environmental advocacy group. It engages in policy advocacy, electoral involvement, and public awareness to promote environmental protection and sustainability. The LCV explicitly supports political candidates who align with its environmental goals, endorsing those committed to advancing climate change, conservation, and public health policies. The organization’s political action arm, the LCV Victory Fund (super PAC), focuses on electoral campaigns to support pro-environment candidates and oppose those perceived as detrimental to environmental progress. David Brower, the Sierra Club’s first executive director, co-founded the LCV.
Carol Browner, the Chair, is a former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Analysis / Bias
The LCV is a progressive organization that advocates for Democratic candidates who prioritize addressing climate change. The LCV Action Fund endorses pro-environment candidates. The League of Conservation Voters’ strategy for 2024 includes President Biden and Vice President Harris for reelection. Furthermore, LCV monitors the voting records of Congress members and publishes the Dirty Dozen list targeting candidates who consistently oppose environmental initiatives. For instance, the 2022 list included candidates like Blake Masters, Herschel Walker, Mehmet Oz’, and Tiffany Smiley. LCV suggests that the ‘Dirty Dozen’ list may have influenced the outcomes of these candidates’ races.
Analyzing Mehmet Oz’s inclusion on the Dirty Dozen list, the LCV cited his claim that CO2 emissions are not a problem due to their low percentage in the air. We verified that this claim was attributed correctly; however, the LCV did not provide a hyperlink to verify it, a practice that would strengthen the verifiability of its statements.
The League of Conservation Voters evaluates the environmental voting records of U.S. Congress members through an annual scorecard. For instance, Senator Ted Budd of North Carolina has a low LCV score of 6% in 2023 and a lifetime score of 4%, indicating his opposition to environmental legislation. His record reveals votes on issues like clean energy, climate change, and environmental justice, often opposing LCV-endorsed positions.
The segment titled “Hall of Republican Clean Energy Hypocrisy Analysis” critiques Republican members of Congress for their opposition to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), highlighting a perceived inconsistency between their voting record and subsequent approval of the IRA’s local benefits, such as job creation and investment. This narrative suggests a discrepancy between public political stances and private acceptance of the act’s positive impacts, framing these actions as hypocritical. It references americanprogress.org, a source assessed by Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) with mixed factual reporting.
Finally, while 501(c)(4) organizations such as the League of Conservation Voters are not legally obligated to reveal their donors, disclosure of donors is important in promoting accountability and trust among the public.
Failed Fact Checks
- Herschel Walker “is heavily funded by the oil and gas industry, raking in more than $140,000 in donations from Big Oil and other energy interests.” – Half True
- Says Donald Trump has opposed plans to clean up “Toxic chemicals that cause cancer (that) are in the water …. (and) put Wisconsin at risk.” – Half True
Overall, we rate the League of Conservation Voters as left-biased based on editorial policies favoring liberal causes. We also rate them as mostly factual due to the lack of transparency in their funding and a mixed record with fact-checkers. (M. Huitsing 03/21/2024)
