History

Stratfor is an American publisher and global intelligence company founded in 1996 in Austin, Texas, by George Friedman, who was the company’s chairman. Stratfor bills itself as a geopolitical intelligence platform. According to their about page “As the world’s leading geopolitical intelligence platform, Stratfor brings global events into valuable perspective, empowering businesses, governments and individuals to more confidently navigate their way through an increasingly complex international environment.”

In 2012, Stratfor was hacked and 5 million emails were released by Wikileaks.

Stratfor is owned by Stratfor Enterprises, LLC. Revenue is generated through subscription fees and donations. Further, in October 2015, Stratfor raised $12 million in funding through a growth equity investment by Dallas-based Teakwood Capital

In review, Stratfor attempts to interpret the significance of today’s global events to provide a way to navigate an “ever-changing and complex global environment.” The website provides news through their Worldview with low bias such as this The Cost of Egypt’s Continued Economic Growth. They also report on political moves such as those by the Trump administration with minimal bias such as this Somalia: Trump Orders Plan for Troop Withdrawal From Somalia. In general, the news is factual and not editorialized.
