History
Samnytt, or Samhällsnytt, is a Swedish news site established in 2017 as the successor to Avpixlat (Unpixelated), a blog associated with xenophobic content and previously classified as an antisemite hate site by groups like the ADL. The platform presents itself as an alternative to mainstream media, focusing on topics it believes are underreported by traditional outlets. It emphasizes coverage of immigration, crime, and political issues from a perspective often critical of the Swedish establishment.

Funded by / Ownership
The Runeskrift AB operates Samnytt in association with Sverigevänliga Intressen and relies on reader donations and subscriptions for revenue. Mats Dagerlind is the publisher. According to Reuters, Samhällsnytt, formerly Avpixlat, received donations through the bank account of a member of the Sweden Democrats, a right-wing populist political party, from 2011 to 2013. Key figures include individuals with ties to the Sweden Democrats, such as former MP Kent Ekeroth. A former Sweden Democrat MP also serves as a columnist.
Analysis / Bias
Samnytt’s story choices and language often align with right-wing populist themes, frequently presenting immigration and multicultural policies in a negative light. A study identified Samnytt as one of the top three sources of “junk news” in Sweden, alongside Nyheter Idag and Fria Tider, responsible for over 85% of such content.
An example article titled “Mohamed gjorde våldtäktsinbrott hos kvinnor – stal underkläder” (“Mohamed committed rape break-ins at women’s homes – stole underwear”) and Mahamed och Mohamed sköt ihjäl fel man – åtalas” (“Mahamed and Mohamed Shot the Wrong Man – Charged”) illustrates Samnytt’s selective approach. The piece emphasizes the alleged perpetrator’s ethnic background in both the headline and content, using emotive language and focusing on ethnicity. This selective reporting reinforces stereotypes and prioritizes provocative narratives over balanced perspectives.
Another example,“Försvarsmakten: Vindkraften ett hot mot rikets säkerhet” (“Swedish Armed Forces: Wind Power a Threat to National Security”), reflects Samnytt’s ideological stance on renewable energy. Here, the article portrays wind power as a national security risk, citing opposition from the Swedish Armed Forces but omitting alternative viewpoints or broader context. This selective framing aligns with right-wing skepticism of renewable energy projects. It demonstrates a tendency to present limited perspectives, reflecting the platform’s tendency toward sensationalized narratives, contributing to its reputation as a “junk news” source.
