History
PTS News is the news service of Taiwan’s Public Television Service, established in 1998 under the Public Television Act. According to its About page, its mandate emphasizes independence, fairness, accuracy, diversity, and journalistic autonomy.
Reuters Institute has identified PTS as one of Taiwan’s most trusted news brands in an otherwise highly polarized media environment.

Funded by / Ownership
PTS is operated by the Public Television Service Foundation, a publicly funded nonprofit broadcaster established by law to serve the Taiwanese public. Taiwanese law states that PTS should operate independently and without interference. Its funding includes government appropriations and project subsidies, but editorial safeguards are built into its governance structure.
Analysis / Bias
PTS News generally produces straightforward domestic, international, health, and public-policy reporting with named journalists and extensive sourcing.
Its coverage of Taiwan’s referendum process presents decisions and reasoning from the Central Election Commission without obvious partisan framing. Likewise, its dengue reporting relies primarily on local health authorities and medical sources.
International analysis can adopt somewhat liberal-democratic or humanitarian framing. In Why is Israel accused of “war governance” after the Gaza peace plan led to even fiercer fighting?, PTS gives substantial attention to Palestinian civilian conditions and criticism of Israeli military control. However, it also includes Israeli government and military positions and cites sources including AP, Reuters, The New York Times, UN agencies, and other international organizations.
PTS has faced occasional political pressure. In 2024, Reporters Without Borders criticized Taiwanese government intervention after PTS’s English-language TaiwanPlus altered a report concerning Donald Trump.
