History

The Navajo Times began in 1959 as a newsletter created by the Navajo Tribal Council to communicate with members of the Navajo Nation. By 1960, it had evolved into a weekly newspaper. After facing challenges, including a temporary shutdown in 1987 due to political tensions, the paper resumed as an independent publication. In 2004, the Navajo Times achieved financial independence from the tribal government. It operates out of Window Rock, Arizona.

Funded by / Ownership

The Navajo Times is published by the Navajo Times Publishing Company, Inc., an entity that gained financial independence from the Navajo Nation Council in 2004. Analysis / Bias

The Navajo Times positions itself as a source of accurate, fair, and comprehensive news coverage that reflects the values and traditions of the Navajo people. Its editorial stance emphasizes transparency, accountability, and advocacy for the Navajo community. The newspaper covers a wide range of topics, including local news, cultural features, political reporting, and issues related to health and education.

Articles and headlines often contain moderately loaded language such as this Arizona faces $2.8 billion class action lawsuit over alleged negligence in AHCCCS fraud scheme. Unfortunately, this story and all others reviewed did not use hyperlinks to source its information, making it difficult to verify the claims.

Editorially, the Navajo Times prioritizes issues central to the Navajo Nation, such as land sovereignty, environmental justice, and the preservation of cultural heritage, often advocating for policies and perspectives that benefit the community. Its focus on social justice, support for Indigenous rights, and critiques of systemic inequities align with progressive values, contributing to a left-leaning bias.
