According to its About page, MDN describes itself as an independent, reader-funded publication without a corporate parent or political sponsor. The outlet acknowledges that it has an editorial point of view and states that it is skeptical of government waste, powerful institutions, and political groupthink. However, MDN continues to demonstrate a strong conservative bias through story selection, framing, and emotionally loaded language. For example, Wu loyalist councilor BLOCKS emergency MCAS hearing as less than half of 10th-graders can read at grade level, instead pushes for Ringo Starr Day describes a Boston councilor as a “Wu loyalist” and frames her actions as protecting the mayor. Similarly, No legal status required: Boston is paying immigrants $575 to learn political organizing, and US-born residents can’t apply emphasizes immigration status and taxpayer expense in its framing.
Immigration coverage remains especially one-sided. MDN frequently highlights crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and prominently emphasizes immigration status in headlines. For example, Guatemalan illegal immigrant with a mile-long rap sheet… relies heavily on ICE framing, while other articles connect immigration enforcement and criminal activity to criticism of Massachusetts Democratic officials. The underlying claims are often sourced, but the selection of stories consistently reinforces a conservative law-and-order narrative.
Other current reporting uses explicitly ideological wording.
