History

Literate Machine is a political and cultural commentary project created and written by Eric Rosenfield. According to its About page, it examines media, history, politics, capitalism, power, and ideology through essays, newsletters, podcasts, and YouTube videos. Rosenfield describes the project as an examination of how capitalism and power shape popular culture and political narratives.

According to his biography, Rosenfield has worked in digital media as a programmer and product manager since 2009 and previously co-created the literary blog Wet Asphalt, which operated from 2005 to 2015. The Literate Machine podcast began in 2020 and is also distributed through Apple Podcasts.

Analysis / Bias

Literate Machine has an explicitly socialist and strongly progressive editorial perspective. Rosenfield frequently argues that capitalism concentrates wealth and political power, advocates worker-owned cooperatives and market socialism, criticizes corporate ownership of media, and portrays mainstream liberal institutions as insufficiently willing to confront economic inequality and right-wing political power.

In Anti-Life or How Capitalism Will Die (with Math), Rosenfield argues that capitalism’s reliance on perpetual economic growth and investment returns is fundamentally unsustainable. He promotes worker cooperatives, unions, mutual aid groups, and political organizations as alternatives to shareholder capitalism. The essay uses extensive sourcing and discusses economists such as Thomas Piketty, but its conclusions frequently move beyond what the underlying evidence establishes.

For example, Rosenfield states that corporate spending on artificial intelligence is now greater than “all spending on personal consumption put together.” This is substantially inaccurate. Estimates place 2026 U.S. AI investment in the hundreds of billions of dollars, while total consumer expenditures amount to many trillions annually. Goldman Sachs, for example, estimates worldwide AI investment exceeding $1 trillion in 2026, still far below U.S. personal consumption expenditures.

In Superman and the Case for Open Borders, Rosenfield explicitly advocates unrestricted immigration, argues that opposition to open borders is fundamentally rooted in racism, supports organizations including the Democratic Socialists of America, and repeatedly describes the Trump movement as fascist. The article includes an unusually extensive bibliography and draws from government data, academic studies, news organizations, and immigration research, but also frequently converts disputed political interpretations into categorical conclusions.

The same pattern appears in Ground News and the War on Reality. Rosenfield argues that conventional left-right media ratings serve wealthy interests and advocates journalist-owned cooperatives as a socialist alternative. He criticizes Ground News, AllSides, Ad Fontes Media, and Media Bias Fact Check, claiming in part that these organizations are opaque about those who conduct their ratings. However, Ad Fontes publicly describes a team of more than 40 analysts and its methodology, while AllSides describes multipartisan panels composed of reviewers from the left, center, and right. MBFC also publicly describes its methodology and editorial review process.

Rosenfield nevertheless demonstrates substantially greater sourcing than many ideological commentary outlets. His essays typically include lengthy bibliographies, direct links to primary documents and academic research, and occasional corrections. An archived article, for example, contains an explicit correction regarding the motivations of Allied intervention following the Bolshevik Revolution, indicating a willingness to amend factual errors.

Editorially, Literate Machine strongly favors socialism, economic redistribution, organized labor, open immigration, LGBTQ rights, and other progressive positions while consistently opposing conservative and capitalist institutions. This results in an Far Left rating.

Failed Fact Checks

• No formal failed fact checks involving Literate Machine or Eric Rosenfield were found from major fact-checking organizations. However, MBFC identified factual overstatements in reviewed material, including the incorrect claim that corporate AI spending exceeds all personal consumption spending.
