History

The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention (LIGP), established in 2021 (evolving from the “Iraq Project for Genocide Prevention and Accountability” founded in 2017), is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Co-founded by Dr. Elisa von Joeden-Forgey and Irene Victoria Massimino, it is named after Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term “genocide.” The Institute’s mission is to connect global grassroots communities with tools for genocide prevention, operating on principles of transparency, nonpartisanship, and rapid response to emerging atrocity risks.

Funded by / Ownership

The Lemkin Institute is an independent, volunteer‑run organization with no disclosed major funders. It operates as a non-profit organization and relies on public donations, volunteer labor, and fundraising from events and merchandise sales. While financial donors are not publicly listed, the Institute emphasizes institutional transparency and publishes annual reports (e.g., 2023) on its website.

Analysis / Bias

The Lemkin Institute positions itself as non‑partisan and grounded in humanitarian ethics, yet its work naturally centers around assigning moral urgency to global crises, including genocide and mass atrocities. It frequently issues Red Flag Alerts, Active Genocide Alerts, and open letters regarding situations it identifies as genocidal or potentially so.

The Institute’s outputs reflect clear advocacy, particularly regarding conflicts such as Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the Gaza war. For example, it’s Red Flag Alert for Genocide – United States: The Rise of the Nazi Salute labels Elon Musk’s public gesture as symbolically linked to genocide risk, and warns of authoritarian trends in U.S. politics.

On foreign affairs, the Institute has issued warnings about genocide in Gaza, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, and Ukraine, sometimes facing criticism—including from members of Lemkin’s own family—for its framing of Israeli actions as genocidal. Another example, in Trump Doubles Down on Demands for Info on Harvard’s International Students, the Institute warns of authoritarian overreach but includes no external links or documentation, relying solely on internal narrative. This reflects a broader pattern in which sourcing is inconsistent; some pieces cite academic or legal frameworks, while others omit third-party verification entirely.

While LIGP frequently cites credible sources, such as UN officials, legal scholars, and eyewitness reporting, it rarely provides direct external hyperlinks within alert statements themselves. Its analysis follows a proprietary “10 Patterns of Genocide” framework, with an emphasis on early-warning and prevention.

The Institute takes a strong moral stance, relying on context and data rather than sensational language. Its assessments aim to drive public and institutional action rather than remain neutral.
