LEFT-CENTER BIAS

These media sources have a slight to moderate progressive/liberal bias.  They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes) to favor progressive/liberal causes.  These sources are generally trustworthy for information, but may require further investigation. See all Left-Center sources.

  • Overall, we rate The Union as left-center biased due to its explicit opposition to Trump and alignment with progressive causes. We rate it as mostly factual in reporting because while it is transparent about its funding through ActBlue, its strong advocacy focus can lead to one-sided representations.

History

Join The Union is a coalition of pro-democracy organizations launched in the spring of 2022 as a subsidiary of The Lincoln Project. Its mission is to defend American democracy against perceived authoritarian threats, particularly those associated with former President Donald Trump, by mobilizing grassroots volunteers and partner organizations to protect voting and civil rights. Now an independent entity, The Union is led by Reed Galen, a co-founder of The Lincoln Project, and Jacqueline Westman, the National Organizing Director. The organization operates nationwide, collaborating with over 100 partner organizations.

Funded by / Ownership

The Union is owned and operated as an independent entity that emerged from its origins as a subsidiary of The Lincoln Project. Reed Galen plays a key role in organizing and directing volunteer efforts through The Union. The organization is funded through donations processed via ActBlue, a platform commonly used by progressive groups. The Union clearly states that its funding is independent and not authorized by any candidate or committee, which provides transparency about its funding source.

Analysis / Bias

The Union primarily focuses on mobilizing volunteers and grassroots efforts to defend democracy, with a particular emphasis on opposing the influence of Donald Trump and his supporters. They explicitly state they are “dedicated to defending our democracy from the Trumpist authoritarian movement” on their Who We Are page. This clear opposition to what they describe as “Trumpist authoritarianism” reflects a strong left-center bias in their advocacy and mission. Their “Take Action” section encourages activities such as voter registration, advocating for voting rights, and supporting pro-democracy candidates in down-ballot races, further aligning them with left-center political views.

The Union collaborates with various organizations, including Swing Blue Alliance, to mobilize voters and support pro-democracy efforts. For example, Swing Blue Alliance organizes grassroots activities like door-knocking campaigns to encourage voter turnout in key states like North Carolina. The Union focuses on active advocacy, as its primary goal is to drive voter participation and counteract the influence of Trump and his allies.
