History

InsideEPA.com, part of Inside Washington Publishers, is a newsletter publishing company that tracks key federal government policy decisions, focusing on U.S. environmental policies, particularly the EPA. It covers air and water quality, waste management, climate change, and chemical regulation.

Founded in 1980 by Steve Ferber, the company began as a small publishing venture and quickly expanded, launching flagship newsletters such as Inside the White House, Inside EPA, and Inside the Pentagon. Ferber sold his interest in the company in 1991 and pursued other ventures in education, publishing, and entrepreneurship. Today, Inside Washington Publishers operates out of Arlington, Virginia, publishing more than two dozen newsletters and online services. These include related platforms such as Inside OSHA Online, Inside Defense, InsideHealthPolicy, and Inside Cybersecurity, which offer specialized newsletters across various policy areas.

Funded by / Ownership

InsideEPA operates under Inside Washington Publishers, a company specializing in policy-focused reporting. Revenue is generated primarily through its subscription model. However, current ownership and additional funding sources are not publicly disclosed.

Analysis / Bias

InsideEPA provides specialized reporting on U.S. environmental policies, particularly those involving the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The platform operates under a paywalled model, restricting full articles to subscribers. Only excerpts are publicly available, limiting transparency and making independent verification of claims challenging for non-subscribers.

An example of their work is the article “States Press Trump For Funds As Some Drop Key Environmental Priorities.” The excerpt discusses concerns from state environmental commissioners over potential federal budget cuts under the Trump administration. It highlights a letter from James Kenney, president of the Environmental Council of States (ECOS), addressing the issue. While the excerpt references the letter and officials’ comments, the inability to access the full text of the article or linked primary sources limits the ability to evaluate the depth of reporting.

Given the politically charged nature of environmental policy, InsideEPA.com’s coverage often highlights pro-environmental stances, focusing on public health risks, regulatory accountability, and funding challenges. However, the platform also includes critiques of EPA decisions from industry representatives and environmental groups, offering a range of perspectives. This approach minimizes overt bias, though the framing often emphasizes the importance of environmental protection.
