History

The Independence Institute is a Colorado-based free-market think tank founded in 1985. According to its About Page, the organization describes itself as an “action tank” dedicated to advancing individual liberty, economic freedom, limited government, free markets, school choice, property rights, health care freedom, Second Amendment rights, and reduced federal involvement in state affairs. The organization engages in public policy research, legislative advocacy, media outreach, investigative reporting, and grassroots activism.

Funded by / Ownership

The Independence Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and does not disclose donors on its website. However, it is a member of the State Policy Network, which has received millions of dollars in funding from fossil fuel interests and conservative donor-advised funds, including DonorsTrust, the Searle Freedom Trust, the Walton Family Foundation, and the Bradley Foundation. SPN-affiliated groups often receive direct grants and share messaging infrastructure. Notably, SPN has promoted climate denial and partnered with organizations like the Heartland Institute, Cato Institute, and Heritage Foundation that question the scientific consensus on climate change.

Analysis / Bias

The Independence Institute strongly promotes conservative and libertarian public policy positions. Its stated vision includes debt-free government, flat taxes, educational choice, limited federal intrusion, free-market environmental policy, and robust property rights protections. The organization’s policy centers consistently advocate market-oriented solutions and limited government intervention.

The Education Policy Center promotes school choice, charter schools, educational vouchers, parental rights, and accountability measures within public education. Similarly, the Energy and Environmental Policy Center argues that environmental protection and energy development are best achieved through free markets, private property rights, and minimal regulation rather than government mandates.

The organization’s advocacy extends to gun rights through its Second Amendment Project and frequently opposes progressive policy initiatives. For example, the article SCOTUS Nixes Discrimination Against Heterosexuals and White Males frames diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts as discriminatory toward majority groups and characterizes DEI as part of a broader left-wing political agenda. The article contains ideological language and opinion-driven analysis that reflects a clear right-leaning perspective.

While many articles cite court decisions, legislation, policy studies, and constitutional arguments, reporting and commentary are generally presented from a conservative-libertarian viewpoint. Coverage frequently favors deregulation, school choice, fossil fuel development, gun rights, and opposition to progressive social and environmental policies.

Failed Fact Checks

  • The Independence itself has not been the subject of formal IFCN fact checks. However, its alignment with SPN and its publication of climate-skeptic and highly partisan education content raise concerns regarding reliability. Several CPC claims, particularly about climate science and CRT, are inconsistent with mainstream academic consensus.

Overall, we rate the Independence Institute right-biased based on its promotion of conservative and libertarian policy positions, including limited government, free-market economics, school choice, gun rights, reduced regulation, and opposition to many progressive initiatives. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to the use of generally factual policy research and legal analysis that is often accompanied by ideological framing, selective evidence, and opinion-driven advocacy.
