Poll Finds Americans Fear AI’s Social Impact

A July Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll found widespread public concern about artificial intelligence, with two-thirds of Americans saying the U.S. should slow AI development until stronger safeguards are in place. While 60% of respondents called AI a major advancement, 57% said it is more likely to degrade society and create mass unemployment than to generate added value or productivity. The poll also found concerns about data centers, with 62% saying they use too much energy and water while providing too few local benefits, and 53% opposing a data center in their own neighborhood.
