Fact vs. Fiction: Did Liz Cheney Write a Letter Urging Democrats to Fight Trump’s “Authoritarian Machine”?

Blatant Lie Fact Check

Claim via Social Media

A viral letter circulating on Facebook, Threads, and X in June 2025 claims former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney wrote a message to the Democratic Party urging stronger resistance to President Trump’s administration, warning that “we’re watching fascism consolidate power in real time.”

Explanation

This claim is false. The 1,400-word letter, which begins with “Dear Democratic Party, I need more from you,” did not originate from Liz Cheney. It was first posted on April 15, 2025, by a Facebook user named “Pru Pru,” who identified herself as the letter’s author, Dr. Pru Lee. She reposted the text again on May 13, reiterating that Cheney did not write it.

Despite this, the letter was widely shared as Cheney’s words, including by former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich, who later corrected the misattribution in his Substack post.

Cheney has never shared this letter on her official social media accounts or Bluesky page, and no credible news outlets have reported that she authored it. A search of major platforms and engines shows the earliest appearances tied to “Pru Pru,” not Cheney.

Internal clues also cast doubt: the letter references having “6,000 followers” — far fewer than Cheney’s combined following of over 700,000. Cheney’s known political shift — including endorsing Kamala Harris in 2024 and leading a PAC that donated largely to Democrats — may have made the letter seem plausible, but that does not make it authentic.

Conclusion

Fact or Fiction? Fiction. Liz Cheney did not write the viral letter calling Democrats to action against Trump’s “authoritarian machine.” It was authored by a Facebook user named Dr. Pru Lee (“Pru Pru”).
