History
Deepcut News is an Australian independent news and commentary outlet launched in May 2025 by journalists Antoun Issa and Alex McKinnon. According to its About page, it focuses on civil liberties, inequality, corruption, Australian politics, foreign policy, and West Asia while positioning itself as an alternative to establishment media.
Issa previously worked for Al-Monitor in Beirut, the Middle East Institute in Washington, The Atlantic, and Guardian Australia. His professional background includes substantial reporting and analysis on Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, civil society, and Middle Eastern politics.
McKinnon left Deepcut in July 2026 and sold his 50% ownership stake to Issa, making Issa the sole owner. At the time, McKinnon reported that Deepcut had more than 16,000 total subscribers and more than 1,000 paid subscribers.

Funded by / Ownership
Deepcut News is owned by Antoun Issa following his July 2026 purchase of co-founder Alex McKinnon’s 50% stake. The publication states that it accepts no government or billionaire funding and relies primarily on reader subscriptions and donations.
Revenue also comes from its paid Substack operation and related podcast content, including Deepthink. Deepcut uses a freelance network of journalists, editors, researchers, and producers rather than a large permanent newsroom.
Analysis / Bias
Deepcut News has a strong progressive and anti-establishment editorial perspective. Its stated mission describes Western governments as criminalizing dissent and “facilitating a genocide,” while characterizing establishment media as serving wealthy and powerful interests. Its coverage strongly emphasizes Palestinian rights, civil liberties, economic inequality, corporate influence, and opposition to right-wing nationalism.
In The Royal Commission’s Blunder Was in Accepting the IHRA Definition, former barrister Jeffrey Loewenstein argues that Australia’s adoption of the IHRA antisemitism definition risks suppressing legitimate criticism of Israel. The article cites the definition’s original drafter, human-rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson, Pew Research, court proceedings, and alternative scholarly definitions. However, it strongly favors critics of the IHRA framework and uses loaded descriptions of pro-Israel organizations and Jewish communal leaders without offering significant counterarguments.
In Political Operatives Are Trying to Intimidate Me, journalist Amy Remeikis describes attempts to intimidate journalists and argues that organized complaints surrounding Israel coverage can discourage critical reporting. The piece is largely personal commentary and does not attempt ideological balance.
Founder Antoun Issa’s Fearful of Trump Clone, Australia Votes Back ‘Boring’ Status Quo characterizes former Liberal leader Peter Dutton’s politics as “hard-right,” “race-baiting,” and modeled on Donald Trump. Issa portrays Labor as centrist and uninspiring while writing sympathetically about Greens policies and pro-Palestinian independent campaigns. This demonstrates that Deepcut’s bias is not simply pro-Labor; it is more consistently aligned with the progressive left and anti-establishment left.
Deepcut nevertheless produces original journalism and frequently supports its claims with government documents, court decisions, polling, established news organizations, and named experts. Its global-affairs coverage also draws on Issa’s extensive professional experience in Middle Eastern journalism.
The primary factual concern is framing rather than wholesale fabrication. Articles frequently employ emotionally charged terminology such as “genocide,” “far right,” “Israel lobby,” “race-baiting,” and “establishment media” as settled descriptions while giving limited space to competing interpretations. This creates significant one-sidedness even when the underlying factual reporting is well sourced.
